Obit quotes
-------------
From Sebastion Lury, a former student:
"Dan knew that to really know a story you had to experience it whether it meant picking up a baseball bat or trying to use the same online program. When he began running simulated disasters I was sure that that would be the death of him, that he would try to actually experience it. This: I never saw this coming."
Brad Brooks, former CNN colleague:
"What he did to his family, there's just no understanding it. What he did to our community has brought shame on all of us. But for what he did to this country, he'll have to settle that account with the Devil himself."
Jeff Clouser, childhood friend:
"An intelegent and interesting violen, guitar and banjo-picking wino for his 53 years, Dan'l dedicated his life to teaching and writing about his love of homemade wine, Women & song. He had a fun life, now he's dead. He shall be missed by Vintners worldwide and drunken afficianados of string music everywhere."
Hannah Buchdahl, former CNN colleague:
"He was such a quiet guy, but so easy to work with, and always had a smile on his face - even when working weekends at CNN."
Amy Williams Jacoby, sister:
"Dan was a great big brother who never held a grudge. Oh, except for the incident of 1968 when while riding on his shoulders I threw up on his head. Yes, he went to the grave holding that grudge without forgiveness."
Aleksandar Zigic, former CNN colleague:
"They dont make journalists like that anymore. just like the movies the best ones were in the 80's."
Keith Whitcomb Jr., former Critic editor:
"The only thing I ever learned from him was the value of a cold martini." (Night on the town in Hartford, Connecticut, during a National Writers Workshop in 2007.)

100 Story Ideas
(Okay, closer to 70)
- Profile Jay Peak. The president of the resort spoke at the retreat and mentioned some of the things in the pipeline, including a four-season water park. Skiing season is here; your readers would be interested in finding out what the area offers.
- Profile Burke Mountain. Speaking of ski season. This resort is closer; is it also better? How does it compare in cost, ski trails, terrain park area, etc.? Can you rent skis?
- Where to go cross-country skiing? Kingdom Trails and Craftsbury Outdoor Center spring to mind. What do they cost? How many miles of trails, etc.?
- Commuter students. Do they feel left out at LSC? What does LSC do to make them feel welcome? What do other schools do for their commuters?
- Dorms 1: Which dorms produce the highest number of disciplinary cases?
- Dorms 2. Have any students remodeled their dorms to make them more livable? Take pictures.
- Fraternity. Would Kappa Delta Phi like to become an official fraternity at LSC? Why aren't there any frats or sororities? What would it take to change that? Do students want a Greek system here?
- President's Hill tow rope: Back in the old days, you could ski down President's Hill and ride back up on a very basic, engine-powered tow rope. Last year, some Mountain Rec seniors started a project aimed at building a new one. What's the status? Carol Moore says she'd welcome it.
- Education. Only 16 percent of the adults in the Northeast Kingdom have a college degree. Carol Moore would like to double that number. How could LSC do that, and what would happen if it did?
- What is LSC doing to attract the Vermont National Guard soldiers who have returned from their deployment in Afghanistan. 30 percent lost their jobs while overseas – bad news for them, but potentially good news for the college, no?
- Ride share. Dozens of LSC students live in the Newport-Derby area. Do they drive down individually? Is there a bulletin board listing ride-share opportunities?
- Girl/guy ratio. Word is that the female-male ratio is especially skewed toward more males in this year's freshman class. Is that correct? Do females like it? Do guys hate it? Does the school worry about it?
- Spiritual place. Many schools, even state-supported ones, maintain a non-denominational chapel where students and faculty and staff can pray, meditate, or just sit and perhaps nap. Why not LSC? The school once had a Christian club (John Kaszenska was the adviser), but doesn't now. Does that mean LSC students aren't spiritual? Does LSC care? Does the SGA care?
- New ARAMARK food service director is an LSC alum.
- Which restaurants deliver to campus or have special deals for students (Timbuktu has two-for-one Tuesday nights)?
- Bus service (new routes): Rural Community Transportation. Do students use it? It’s cheap.
- Colony collapse: no more bees? Is this an issue in Vermont? Two professors keep honeybees: Alexandre Strokanov and Jon Fitch.
- Crime rates – are they going up or down at LSC?
- Photocopier privacy: Can LSC “see” what you copy?
- Hunter education class: when is the next one? Do LSC students hunt?
- Integrated Library Database Searching
- West Barnet Woodworks
- Snowshoe Farm Alpacas (Peacham)
- NEK Artisans Guild (St. J)
- GRACE Old Firehouse Gallery (Hardwick)
- Where to put the parents – good and bad hotels in the area
- China recruitment – one student started in the fall, another started this spring; more to come?
- Capital campaign – how much is LSC trying to raise for 100th anniversary?
- 100th anniversary events.
- Most popular car make/color – check Public Safety permit database.
- Kingdom Trails new bike trail
- Adventure Recreation program – Jamie Struck
- Personal trainers at the fitness center – are they booked already?
- Vermont Food Venture Center (Hardwick)
- Office moves – Donna Keely has two offices now
- New FERPA rule
- New faculty 1: Ian Balcom, Chemistry
- New faculty 2: Ann Nygard, Business Administration, adjunct (also IWoW director)
- Are insurance costs for students increasing?
- Community work crew – spend a day with the convicts!
- Spend night in jail
- Dorm room decorating – best-looking room? Weirdest?
- Off-campus vs on-campus – pros and cons of each.
- Detoxification shelter http://bit.ly/bZAsWf #UVM -- should we have one?
- Drugs on campus: Professor Meri Stiles has been researching LSC drug use for a few years.
