Stories for May 28, 1989

Story 1: “Big Farm Companies Try Hand at Organic Methods”
After reading this story I realized that it was Novelty because it was about farmers trying and experimenting without the use of synthetic chemicals. So since it was something new and unique I believe its more Novelty than immediacy.

Story 2: “States Sell Chances for Gold As a Rush Turns to Stampede”
This story deals with America’s changing values about Gambling and since it has to do with all of America I would have to say that the news value here is Impact.

Story 3: “Chinese Students Urge End to Siege of Beijing Square”
This story has to deal with Chinese students who are protesting their government and are occupying Tienneman Square in order to try and fight for democracy and to get their prime minister to resign. Since this deals with protesting I am going to have to say the news value in this story is conflict.

Story 4: “War Drums in the House”
This piece is about the third ranking democrat in the house who resigned in order to save his fellow democrats from an investigation. Since in the story it says that the democrats believe the resignation happened because of pressure by the republicans the news value in this story is conflict.

Story 5: “Soviet Dissenters Denied Major Role in Parliament”
This story involves political insurgents who want a more radical change in their government but were denied seats in their legislature. In the article, it blames soviet intellectuals for the loss and stating that they are arrogant people. This would lead me to believe the news value for this article is conflict.

Nicholas Russo (April 10, 1991)

"Israel backs plan for single session on mideast peace"- Conflict, because in order to back a plan for peace, there must be war. Which there is in this case.

"Oficial reported to face ouster after his dissent on Iraq Exports"-Prominence, because a white house secretary leaked information to Iraq prior to the invasion of Kuwait.

"Gorbachev orders republics to half rebellious moves"- This one is tough because conflict may be involved and Gorbachev is a prominent figure, but I said "-immediacy is the most prominent news value because he issued the order right before the article was written."

"Kurds will die in vast numbers without swift aid, agencies say"- I said emotion is the most prominent because people will die in vast numbers, and few people enjoy seeing others die.

"Harm from Valdez spill worse than was thought"- Impact because the spill is having a greater one than was thought.

Joseph Peters (January 13, 1989)

"Nerve Gas Scheme Stopped in Jersey"
News Value: This story gains importance because of Jersey's' proximity to New York.

"Student Takes Gun to School; Another Is Caught With Fake"
News Value: There's some novelty involved, but this story plays mostly to emotions. Any incident involving kids, guns and schools stir emotions in people.

"Miami Upsets Kansas on Foul Shot With 2 Seconds to Play"
News Value: Immediacy. This game is essentially meaningless years later, but at the time it was a big upset with an interesting finish.

"Bear Stearns Has Record Profits in Quarter"
News Value: A company's record profit doesn't gain any notoriety unless that company is Bear Stearns. That company's prominence makes this news.

"Beating in Panama Condemned by U.S."
News Value: Conflict. The story is about the beating--and potential killing--of a U,S, soldier, which could have been the precursor to a longer conflict.

"7 Day Wait for Gun Purchases Hits Crucial Obstacle in House" - This story has the news value of impact because it is something the affects people who live under this government.

"U.S. Mandates Tests for Lead In Tap Water" - This story has the news value of immediacy because this is something that can affect peoples' health, and people need to know immediately that the water is being tested, and should not be used at that time. I feel that it also can be classified as a news value of impact because this directly impacts peoples health, and feeling of security.

"Worldwide Effort to Aid Bangladesh Called too Little" - The news value of this story would be impact I feel this because the governments from the United States as well as many other countries are trying to come together to come up with a relief fund to rebuild Bangladesh after a recent Cyclone disaster.

"Dinkins and Doomsday" - This story's news value is prominence this is because they mayor was caught in a sort of a budgeting deal with outside companies.
