Story ideas for sale

The college had a retreat on Friday for faculty, staff and RAs, and it turned out to be a cornucopia of story ideas. I list some below.

- Profile Jay Peak. The president of the resort spoke at the retreat and mentioned some of the things in the pipeline, including a four-season water park. Skiing season is coming up; your readers would be interested in finding out what the area offers.
- Profile Burke Mountain. Speaking of ski season. This resort is closer; is it also better? How does it compare in cost, ski trails, terrain park area, etc.? Can you rent skis?
- Where to go cross-country skiing? Kingdom Trails and Craftsbury Outdoor Center spring to mind. What do they cost? How many miles of trails, etc.?
- Where to skate? Fenton Chester Arena has free-skate hours. Sometimes, CAB arranges for free skating there.
- Hunting. A lot of students from this area hunt. Find one and spend an hour in his/her tree stand.
- Commuter students. Do they feel left out at LSC? What does LSC do to make them feel welcome? What do other schools do for their commuters?
- Dorms 1. Which dorms produce the highest number of disciplinary cases?
- Dorms 2. Have any students remodeled their dorms to make them more livable? Take pictures.
- Fraternity. Would Kappa Delta Phi like to become an official fraternity at LSC? Why aren't there any frats or sororities? What would it take to change that? Do students want a Greek system here?
- President's Hill tow rope: Back in the old days, you could ski down President's Hill and ride back up on a very basic, engine-powered tow rope. Last year, some Mountain Rec seniors started a project aimed at building a new one. What's the status? Carol Moore says she'd welcome it.
- Education. Only 16 percent of the adults in the Northeast Kingdom have a college degree. Carol Moore would like to double that number. How could LSC do that, and what would happen if it did?
- Sports. Athletic teams at LSC get together once a week for dinner. They also study together. Does that improve team cohesiveness? Does it improve grades? What's the Student Athletic Advisory Committee?
- Ride share. Dozens of LSC students live in the Newport-Derby area. Do they drive down individually? Is there a bulletin board listing ride-share opportunities?
- Girl/guy ratio. Word is that the female-male ratio is especially skewed toward more males in this year's freshman class. Is that correct? Do females like it? Do guys hate it? Does the school worry about it?
- Spiritual place. Many schools, even state-supported ones, maintain a non-denominational chapel where students and faculty and staff can pray, meditate, or just sit and perhaps nap. Why not LSC? The school once had a Christian club (John Kaszenska was the adviser), but doesn't now. Does that mean LSC students aren't spiritual? Does LSC care? Does the SGA care?

for my story I plan to profile this upcoming flu season. Does it seem to be like its going to be better or worse than last year (with Swine flu going around). Is there another outbreak stirring? I plan to interview the Brown house on this issue and maybe even try to find another outsource.
